Someone asked me to post some of the baby pictures I've been taking. I can't, because these are not my kids. There is a certain amount of trust given to you when you are asked to take pictures of other people's children, namely, that you will not post them on the internet where weirdos could find them. So instead, I bring to you today some of the poetry written by my cat.
That's right, I said my cat.
We took in Pablo (also known as "BPS," or "Big Piece of Shit") when he was a balding stray, because our elderly neighbor was in love with him and we were afraid he was going to be hit by a car. Very sweet natured and excessively affectionate, Pablo also apparently channels the oh-so creative souls of his namesakes (Picasso and Neruda). My mother gave me some of those refrigerator magnets with which you write poetry (thematic, of course – cats!), and to be polite I put some on the bottom half of the fridge.
One morning I awoke to find a scattering of little magnets on the floor, and putting them up in random order I discovered a poem – "Tabby Mess Lap." It soon became apparent that it was Pablo writing the poetry. Over the next few months Pablo wrote about his life, his love-hate relationship with the cat who also lived with us at the time, and her subsequent death. He also left me rather cryptic poems about his life before we took him in, my favorite of which is "Siamese Mouse."
Now that we have a dog, Pablo has stopped knocking off the magnets. Like so many great artists, we may never know all of the work he could have written. I hope you enjoy the ones he has given us:
siamese mouse
lick paw
sad mice
cunning
cough
through
drink
ear above
soft lick
sleep
